How Is Lumbar Disc Hernia Diagnosed?

Careful listening of your complaints, whatever the disease, is a prerequisite for correct diagnosis. In order to diagnose your lumbar disc herniation; it is very important to learn your profession, the sports you are going, the accidents that you may have undergone, past diseases, the drugs you use, your smoking habit, and all the previous surgeries you had. Examination starts with measuring your body height and weight, and after you get undressed it should be in the form of a thorough observation of all your neck and back while you are squatting, leaning and walking; to continue with surveillance of the power and reflexes in all the muscles of your legs in detail.

Later on, laboratory examination requests will complete this process. Of course, it is not possible to make such an assessment within 30 minutes or less than 20 minutes. If your doctor gives you only three or five minutes and even directly wants your laboratory examinations without even touching you; there is no chance of making a correct and healthy diagnosis for your complaints. Even worse, if a false diagnosis is made; then the treatment to be performed will also be wrong. This is where all the medical disasters start. The treatment takes a lifetime, but the diagnosis takes a minute… Wrong, of course…

Of the laboratory tests that will help the diagnosis, MR may be in the first place, but of course it is not an open MR; an MR exam that needs to be taken on a state-of-the-art machine and one that lasts for at least 15 minutes. Together with your MR, you are always asked for blood tests so as not to miss some other important diseases. In addition to these, your moving x-ray films, especially those that are filmed while standing upright are necessary. Nerve measurements such as MEP (motor evoked potentials), SEP (sensory evoked potentials) and EMG (electromyography) may also be requested as well as CT (computed tomography), bone scintigraphy or DXA (bone scan showing bone density) in order to show your bones in more detail.
