What Is Radiotherapy?

It may be necessary to use radiation therapy for a tumor that is located in an area of the brain where an operation cannot be performed, for a malignant brain tumor, and for a repetitive tumor once it has been operated upon. The high dose of radiation given to the whole brain during many days destroys the tumor; but it also damages the healthy brain tissue that is normally working.

To prevent this, high-tech radiotherapy systems have been developed that allow all of the radiation dose to be focused only on the area where the tumor is present; not harming the normal brain tissue.

This treatment is called “radiosurgery” and the devices that apply this treatment can now be found in many centers of our country under names such as “gamma knife” and “cyber knife”.
